STEM Advancement Program (STEMAP)
About
The STEM Advancement Program (STEMAP) engages students from New Mexico regional universities, community colleges, and tribal colleges in the research funded by New Mexico EPSCoR over the summer and continues to support students throughout the academic year.
Summer
Each summer, 10 to 12 students are selected to take part in the eight to nine week STEM Advancement Program. Students are paired with another student to assist in NM EPSCoR research throughout the summer. Students usually work about 40 hours a week.
- Week 1
All STEMAP students take part in a week of preparation workshops, topics include introduction to NM EPSCoR research areas, research ethics, communication, and data management, at New Mexico Tech campus. - Weeks 2 through 7 or 8
Student teams work with NM EPSCoR-funded faculty and students at their respective research sites, either New Mexico State University, New Mexico Tech, or University of New Mexico campuses. - End of the Summer Presentations
Students present their results to their research teams, faculty, mentors, family, friends, and NM EPSCoR staff. - Conference Presentations (optional)
Students can present their STEMAP summer research at state, regional, and national conferences.
- Summer Benefits! $4000 stipend, campus housing (family housing may be available to participants with families), meal allowance, and 3 credits of independent study from New Mexico Tech. Conference travel expenses are reimbursed by the STEM Advancement Program, if students present their research at that conference (limitations apply).
Academic Year
Beyond the summer, STEMAP students may choose to continue their participation through:
- Webinars
Students can participate in monthly webinars on topics that support their academic success, such as developing effective science posters and abstracts, applying for an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, and mentoring. - Extended Research
Students can continue their STEMAP summer research work with a sponsoring faculty member at their home campus, when available.
- Academic Year Benefits! $2000 stipends are given to students who actively participate in either the Webinars or Extended Research.
Eligibility
Undergraduate students who will not earn a bachelor’s degree before August 2017, are either a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident, and are enrolled at any college in New Mexico (except for the main campuses of the University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, and New Mexico Tech). All Diné College campuses are eligible.
